Vishay Intertechnology, one of the world's biggest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors, has launched a new line of screw-terminal aluminium electrolytic capacitors, enabling designers to pack more energy storage into a smaller footprint.
{alcircleadd}The Vishay BCcomponents 202 PML-ST series, which comes in 11 case sizes with dimensions ranging from 35 mm by 60 mm to 90 mm by 220 mm, offers higher capacitance/voltage (CV) values in smaller case sizes than previous-generation solutions while also offering higher ripple current of 49.6 A, a lower ESR of 2 m, and a long useful life of 10,000 hours at +85 °C. The electrolytic capacitors have a cylindrical aluminium container insulated with a blue sleeve and pressure relief in their sealing disc. They provide high CV combinations ranging from 56 000 µF at 200 V to 15 000 µF at 450 V.
For instance, the smaller 50 mm by 105 mm case size is now available for a CV rating of 2200 µF / 400 V, which was previously only accessible in the 65 mm by 105 mm case size. The capacitors provide better ripple current and ESR for CV ratings at case sizes comparable to earlier-generation products. For instance, a CV rating of 4700 µF / 400 V delivers 16 per cent less ESR and 12 per cent more ripple current.
The RoHS-compliant devices are perfect for filtering, buffering, and energy storage in pulsed power applications with a necessary lifetime of 10 to 15 years since they are polarised aluminium electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte. Examples of typical end products include industrial motor drives, rail traction for buses and trains, HVAC, UPS, wind turbines, solar power inverters, and medical X-ray equipment.
