With the holiday season coming to an end, civic authorities across the Americas and the Caribbean have stepped in to clean the litters generated over the last few weeks. The objective is to collect and recycle all the recyclable waste such as aluminium beverage cans and aluminium foil and reduce landfill as much as possible.
{alcircleadd}The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) in Grand Cayman, Caribbean, has placed collection skips at six locations for the public to put their holiday waste and natural Christmas trees inside them for the annual mulching programme.
The DEH is also requesting everyone to deposit their PET bottles, tin/aluminium cans, paper and cardboard at the drop-off sites for recycling.
In another similar initiative, Macon-Bibb Solid Waste Department have reminded people to start recycling their waste aluminium cans, plastic materials and other paper products now that the holidays are almost over.
Macon Bibb Solid Waste Department Director Kevin Barkley said the department has seen more recycling items since Christmas.
“We’re diverting this waste from the landfill. We’re not paying for that disposal for these materials. We’re diverting right now about 10% by weight of all the materials we use to take to the landfill are now going back out there to be turned into new products,” he said.
