World alumina production in May 2023 recorded a monthly recovery of 4.32 per cent to reach 11.918 million tonnes, found the International Aluminium Institute survey. In April, the output was down by 1.69 per cent M-o-M to 11.425 million tonnes, following a sequential rise of 0.83 per cent in March from 11.331 million tonnes to 11.621 million tonnes. So, world alumina output registered a growth in May for an alternate month.
{alcircleadd}But on the other hand, on a year-on-year calculation, world alumina production in May edged a fall of 2.34 per cent from 12.204 million tonnes, learned IAI.
World daily average alumina production in May 2023 was 384,500 tonnes, up by 0.97 per cent from 380,800 tonnes in April but down by 2.34 per cent from 393,700 tonnes in May 2022.
During January-May 2023, world alumina production totalled 56.715 million tonnes, reflecting a decline of 0.99 per cent from 57.282 million tonnes during the same period last year.
China produced 6.996 million tonnes of alumina in May 2023 compared to 6.770 million tonnes in April 2023 and 7.050 million tonnes in May 2022. That indicated a month-on-month rise of 3.34 per cent and a year-on-year fall of 0.77 per cent. From January to May, China produced 32.986 million tonnes of alumina – 3.99 per cent more than 31.720 million tonnes a year ago.
China’s daily average alumina output in May 2023 was 225,700 tonnes, unchanged from the previous month and 0.75 per cent down year-on-year from 227,400 tonnes.
In the Oceania region, alumina production in May 2023 came in at 1.621 million tonnes, with daily output of 52,300 tonnes. The monthly output was sequentially up by 2.14 per cent from 1.587 million tonnes but down year-on-year by 6.25 per cent from 1.729 million tonnes. In the first five months of 2023, alumina production in the Oceania region amounted to 7.846 million tonnes after a fall of 8.69 per cent over the year from 8.593 million tonnes.
In Asia & Africa (ex-China), alumina output during May’23 was 1.167 million tonnes, bringing the total production in five months to 5.464 million tonnes, according to IAI.
