The 12th International Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium Conference & Exhibition (IBAAS-IIM 2024), held at BITS Goa during September 25-27, 2024, was a resounding success. With the theme "Aluminium Industry – Vision 2030," the event showcased India’s rapid expansion in alumina and aluminium production, with a special focus on value addition, import substitution, and energy conservation.

The conference attracted over 230 delegates from 100 companies/organizations across the globe, covering critical topics such as decarbonization and digitalization of aluminium production. Around 70 technical papers were presented, exploring the latest trends and innovations in carbon footprint reduction, automation, and AI applications in the aluminium industry.

Inaugural Session
The event was inaugurated by Prof. D.M. Kulkarni of BITS, with Dr. Anupam Agnihotri, Director of JNARDDC, as the Chief Guest. Other esteemed guests included Dr. Vilas Tathavadkar of Hindalco Industries and Mr. Errol Jaeger, a renowned alumina technologist. The IBAAS-IIM 2024 souvenir, containing abstracts of technical papers and sponsor details, was unveiled during the session, and the ESG Awards were presented to leading organizations for their contributions to sustainability.
Technical Sessions
Keynote addresses and technical sessions focused on decarbonization, sustainability, and Aluminium Industry 4.0 innovations. The second day highlighted strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting AI-driven solutions. Experts also analysed the global bauxite and aluminium market, with particular emphasis on India. The third day featured parallel technical sessions on bauxite-alumina, aluminium smelting, and downstream industries, with presentations from industry experts and R&D institutions such as HINDALCO, VEDANTA, and JNARDDC.
Awards & Closing
The best technical papers were recognized with awards to encourage young scientists and engineers in their contributions to the aluminium industry. The conference concluded with a post-conference tour of HINDALCO’s Belagavi Alumina Refinery.
