Hindalco’s Aditya Aluminium that a operates smelter and power plant complex at Lapanga in Sambalpur has taken up the responsibility to revive water bodies and conserve running water, wastewater and rainwater in the Rengali Block habitation area. The majority of Odisha’s Sambalpur district, Rengali Block is facing an obtuse water crisis over uneven rainfall and water body depletions, which project an unhealthy outcome for the agricultural economy of the region.

The Unit Head of Aditya Aluminium, Sameer Nayak, narrated: “Our teams have been working relentlessly to contribute towards biodiversity management. The result is reflected in the Aditya Township which has vibrant flora and fauna. We have developed a 60,000 m³ capacity rainwater harvesting pond in the township. Over 180,576 m³ capacity rainwater harvesting structures have been renovated/ constructed in the last five years.”
“Besides, we have developed more than 50 lagoons for the benefit of the community which has helped 178 farmers who can now cultivate 352 acres of land and grow multiple crops. The irrigation facility provided by the government and facilitated by Aditya Aluminium has augmented the local farmers’ income manifold from INR 11,000 in the year 2013-14 to INR 50,000-Rs.1 lakh per annum now. In Dhorropani, over 50 acres of land are cultivated by using water from these ponds. This apart, we have partnered with the Government to dig and renovate 5 of the 9 lagoons allocated to Rengali block as part of the ‘Azadika Amrit Mahotsav’ celebration”, confirmed Mr Nayak in addition.
Guided by Aditya Aluminium, Sriram Padhan, a modernised farmer hailing from the Dhorropani village has been yielding different types of crops over a long period. The company has been aiding the local people with capacity building, initiation of proper agricultural practices, agri-input, assured insurance and drip irrigation. Padhan utilises water from the ponds that have been reinstated by Aditya Aluminium and currently generates about INR1.5 lakhs yearly.
