Aluminium the choice of metal for architects: Top 10 projects in 2022

AL Circle

The usage of aluminium is still growing, expanding in the twenty-first century thanks to the development of advanced alloys that can withstand enormous loads, allowing for the use of strong glass walls that let more light into buildings and skyscrapers. The use of aluminium in architecture has made it possible to construct taller structures with better energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. The concept of "green building" is becoming increasingly important in terms of environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions. It is not a surprise that aluminium, one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient building materials, is used extensively in this contemporary ecologically friendly architecture. A new and modern era of lightweight building has been ushered in by aluminium. However, aluminium's capacity to be recycled without losing its original qualities and overall quality is the most significant trait in terms of green construction. Some current aluminium may be recycled up to 100 per cent, using up to 90 per cent less energy than it would produce new aluminium. Given below is the list of the top 10 projects with aluminium in 2022:

Albert-Kahn art museum

Thanks to rehabilitation work and the development of a brand-new structure by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the public may now access the brand-new Albert-Kahn art museum outside of Paris. An envelope made of randomly placed aluminium strips attracts passersby and offers the spaces a dance of light and shadow. Visitors are welcome to examine the sizable Kahn collections in a distinctive 2300 square metre building below the structure's uneven aluminium dome, which reflects the differences in the sky.

InDéfense office and Hôtel OKKO

The InDéfense office and Hôtel OKKO, located side by side between a train and a road in the Les Groues neighbourhood of Nanterre and overlooking the La Défense business district, were finished by 3XN, a Danish architecture firm with its headquarters in Copenhagen. The structure was constructed with "distinct but complementary" faceted checkerboard aluminium facades that reflect light and are bronze in colour. To provide a more extended section of the street front, the two buildings were linked along one of its edges using comparable formal and material language. This was done to create a potent visual trademark for the active neighbourhood.

Mark Cavagnero Associates

Glass, concrete, and steel are used to create the George and Judy Marcus Hall (Marcus Hall) for the Liberal and Creative Arts, designed by Mark Cavagnero Associates. The rectangular volume of thin, recycled aluminium sheets was covered with a massive concrete base in the 75,000-square-foot academic structure. Despite San Francisco's typically moderate weather and temperatures, Cavagnero chose aluminium insulated panels and a horizontal aluminium sunshade for the project because of their non-corrosive qualities. Additionally taken into account were the location's closeness to the Pacific Ocean, the consequent marine wind, and the city's well-known fog.

Hérault Arnod

A curved, twisted shell constructed of textured aluminium plates covers the multifunctional sports and entertainment complex, Espace Mayenne, designed by local firm Hérault Arnod architects in Laval, France. The project is a part of a broader scheme to develop land on the northwest outskirts of Laval and is located on a former military installation. A 250-meter outdoor velodrome will also be built as part of this design, and an adjacent marsh and woodland will be landscaped.

GolFN

Aluminium is no longer just another metal. It is among the most frequently utilised and well-liked materials in the sector. Nearly everything uses aluminium, from technology to architecture. A contemporary residence created by Jakarta-based GeTs Architects is partially clad in perforated laser-cut aluminium panels. The house, called "GolFN," stands out for its patterned laser-cut screen, which protects occupants from blinding sunlight and severe downpours while allowing them to enjoy views of the surrounding golf course and Mount Salak.

Everden House

The Everden House, a family residence built by the Canadian business StudioAC, is located in Toronto's Cedarvale neighbourhood. It has gabled features and corrugated aluminium siding. The three-story mansion, which is basic yet opulent and is situated on a small and rectangular land, resembles stacked boxes. The home's gabled roof alludes to the housing stock in the area. The peaked design was used on several windows and interior elements as well. Two portions of a gabled roof slope away from the roof ridge.

3ASH House

For architects, aluminium offers countless creative opportunities. Because aluminium reflects sunlight, buildings may be much more at ease throughout the summer. This may result in cheaper energy costs. It also has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, making it an excellent material for construction and demonstrating how even a small amount of aluminium can reinforce a structure. The 3ASH House by Czarl Architects, a dramatic building with a macho aspect, is situated in Singapore.

Senior Architectural Systems

Senior Architectural Systems, located in Doncaster, completed the fourth building project for Manchester Life by supplying a complete aluminium fenestration package for the most current Lampwick Quay apartment building constructed by John Sisk & Son Ltd. The estate has 213 apartments spread out over three blocks with five, six, and 10 stories each, as well as ground-floor commercial space and shared amenities. Around the facility, Aire Valley Architectural Aluminium has installed Senior's aluminium windows, commercial doors, and curtain wall solutions.

Archikubik

The 11-story structure, designed by Archikubik, lies in the middle of the brand-new Port-Marianne neighbourhood, adjacent to the city's university and historic district. The façade of this project, which has an aluminium exterior covering, is its key selling point. The façade draws attention by mimicking slight variations in light thanks to its double-skinned envelope technology that creates a translucent veil.

Global Aluminium EXPO 2023

F51

The F51 is the first multi-story skating area in the south of England to be insulated by aluminium. Nobody can tell from the outside that the building's interior is constructed of wooden ramps, uneven concrete, and awkward street furniture. The primary request made to the Folkestone, Kent-based F51 designers was to build a parking lot, which is why the building took the form of a massive edifice.
