Bass Pro Shops reduces aluminium boatbuilding workforce by 10%

North America's premier outdoor and conservation company, Bass Pro Shops, has announced a reduction in its aluminium boatbuilding workforce, trimming approximately 10 per cent of its employees. The company employs around 1,000 individuals across its Lebanon and Bolivar, Missouri facilities. This decision is part of a strategic adjustment in response to evolving market conditions and operational efficiencies.

Bass Pro stated, “The decision to eliminate any position is not something we take lightly. Our employees are the best in the industry and have never wavered in their commitment to building superior products for our customers. Out of respect and appreciation for their dedicated service, the company will continue to support each outfitter as fairly as possible through the transition.”

The company expressed its intention to rehire affected employees once market conditions improve.

On August 3, 2024, CNN highlighted concerns about America's post-pandemic robust job market, which appears to falter after a disappointing July hiring report. The unemployment rate has surged to 4.3 per cent, its highest level in three years, significantly impacting consumer spending. Since consumer spending drives about 70 per cent of the US economy and is closely tied to employment, Americans facing difficulties finding new jobs may have to spend more cautiously or cut back significantly, evoking concern in the general public and policymakers.

Additionally, layoffs could exacerbate the situation. However, the recent rise in unemployment is partly attributed to an increase in the number of people entering the workforce.

Bass Pro added, “The current economic environment is very challenging for many sectors of the economy, including automotive, power sports and agriculture. Inflationary pressures coupled with a dramatic increase in interest rates are contributing to a downturn in the economy, creating stiff headwinds in the recreational boating industry. With slowing consumer demand, we must lower production and regretfully make the difficult decision to reduce our workforce.”
