Hindalco’s Hirakud flat-rolled products plant bags dual ASI certification

Last week, Hindalco Industries Limited reportedly bagged dual certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative – 1) Performance Standard V2 (2017) and 2) Chain of Custody V1 (2017) for its aluminium rolling operations at Hirakud FRP (flat rolled products) plant in Odisha, India.

Hindalco achieves ASI certification for the second time. Earlier, it received Performance Standard Certification for its Mouda aluminium foil plant.

In May 2022, Hindalco’s Hirakud plant joined Aluminium Stewardship Initiative as a new production and transformation member.

At the Hirakud plant with 135,000 tonnes of capacity, Hindalco produces thin-gauge tight tolerance flat rolled products, including ultra-light gauge foil stock for making aseptic carton packs, can body stock for beverage cans, closure stock for bottle caps, fan blade stock, electronic and panel stock for panel bodies, closure stock for bottle caps, fan blade stock, and electronic and panel stock for panel bodies. All these products are destined for various industries like electrical, consumer durables, transport, and defense sectors. Hirakud is the first and only manufacturer of can body stock in India.

On achieving dual certification, Mr. Nilesh Koul, Senior President – Aluminium Downstream, Hindalco, said: “We are delighted to receive the dual certification from ASI for our Hirakud plant. This dual ASI Certification, coupled with appropriate upstream sourcing can help Hindalco’s Hirakud FRP plant meet its customers’ responsible sourcing requirements, and enable the use of on-product ASI claims.”

The independent, third-party audits of Hindalco Industries Ltd.’s Hirakud FRP facility was carried out by LiberoAssurance.
