Galesburg, a city in Knox County, Illinois, United States that has long championed environmental stewardship is preparing to say goodbye to a nearly four-decade institution: G & M Distributors’ aluminium can recycling operation. The facility, set to close on December 1st, has been a fixture since the early 1980s, providing a crucial service in diverting waste from landfills and promoting recycling within the community. However, mounting market challenges, increased operational costs, and a shrinking need for the service have forced G & M’s hand.
{alcircleadd}Adam Vitale, President of G & M Distributors, expressed the company’s pride in their longstanding commitment to recycling, acknowledging the sense of loss that will follow the closure. Yet, in a message that underscores both resilience and adaptability, Vitale assures the community that G & M’s dedication to environmental sustainability remains steadfast. No jobs will be lost in the process, and G & M is actively exploring other innovative avenues to promote sustainable practices in Galesburg and beyond.
The closure signals a shift not just for G & M but for Galesburg’s approach to sustainability. It is a reminder that while challenges may alter the forms in which efforts manifest, the commitment to a greener future need not wane. G & M’s pledge to find new ways to support recycling initiatives is a call to the community to remain engaged, adaptable, and proactive in forging a path forward.
Adam Vitale said, “We recognise the importance of recycling to our planet’s future and encourage residents to continue recycling.”
“While this decision was not made lightly, we are focused on navigating the challenges ahead and seeking new opportunities to advance sustainability initiatives.”
Vitale mentioned that at one point, Anheuser-Busch recognised G & M for reaching an impressive milestone of recycling 1 million pounds of aluminium cans.
He added, “Since the advent of curbside recycling, our numbers have just gone down drastically. And now, we pale compared to what we used to do.”
"G & M pays 25 cents per pound for recyclable aluminium, with a deduction for impurities. To thank the community for its support over the years, G & M will be offering an additional 5 cents per pound bonus on all aluminium cans recycled at the centre during the month of November."
