According to a recent report, Hydro has planned to initiate the production of remelt aluminium scrap ingot at Wrexham plant, UK, to increase the recycling of post-consumer scrap. This project will take the company closer to its sustainability drive by enabling it to offer more low-carbon aluminium to its European customers.
{alcircleadd}Ingrid Guddal, Head of Recycling in Hydro Aluminium Metal, said: “We see increasing interest from forward leaning customers across Europe to buy Hydro’s low-carbon aluminium, particularly within the automotive, transport, and buildings and construction segments.”
Hydro’s new investment in producing remelt scrap ingot will increase its recycling capacity to around 103,000 tonnes per annum, letting it process and recycle a wider range of post-consumer aluminium scrap. This will uplift the company’s position in the UK market, creating around 30 full-time jobs.
Hydro will source scrap for remelting from local suppliers in the region and use the remelt scrap ingot produced at the Wrexham plant as feedstock in its European aluminium plants. Using post-consumer recycled scrap ingot as raw material will help Hydro further reduce carbon footprint in its primary and recycled aluminium products.
Wayne Clifton, Hydro’s plant manager in Wrexham, said: “We are eager to increase our capacity here in Wrexham to meet increased customer demand for low-carbon aluminium. Every year, around one million tonnes of aluminium scrap leaves Europe. This investment will ensure that more post-consumer scrap is kept in the loop and processed here at home. The remelt scrap ingot will then be turned into new, low-carbon aluminium products that contribute to Europe’s green transition.”
A report also reveals that Hydro Wrexham has recently acquired a property close to its existing recycling plant to develop a sorting facility. Hydro has the ambition to double its post-consumer scrap recycling capacity by 2025, and the new investment in Wrexham is one of its several projects to reach the target.
