India’s exports of total aluminium to the US drop 8% in Q3 2019; semi-finished exports stand 20% higher

India’s exports of total aluminium including crude metal and alloys and semi-finished products to the US in the first three quarters of 2019 stood 8.19% lower than the same period of 2018. India exported 164,800 tonnes of aluminium to the US in January-September, from 179,500 tonnes in January-September 2018, as updated by US Census Bureau.

In September, aluminium exports amounted to 7,390 tonnes, less 58.41% from September 2018’s export volume of 17,770 tonnes. On a month-on-month comparison, exports declined by 31.64% from 10,810 tonnes in August.

Crude metal and alloys export fell 70.64% or 9,890 tonnes year-on-year and 36.48% or 2,360 tonnes month-on-month in September 2019. Exports stood at 4,110 tonnes, down from 14,000 tonnes in September 2018 and from 6,470 tonnes in August. India exported 121,000 tonnes of these products to the US in the first three quarters of 2019, from 143,000 tonnes exported in the first three quarters of 2018.  This marked a drop of 15.38% YoY.

Exports of semi-finished products (plates, sheets, bars, etc.) to the US stood at 3,280 tonnes in September, which indicates a decline of 13% year-on-year and 24.42% month-on-month. In Q3 2019, exports came in at 43,800 tonnes as compared to 36,500 tonnes in Q3 2018.

On the import side, India’s total imports of aluminium including scrap from the US stood at 198,000 tonnes in Q3, up from 143,000 tonnes in Q3 2018. Imports were 21,400 tonnes in September as compared to 24,600 tonnes in September 2018.
