The Malaysian government has prolonged the period of moratorium on bauxite mining in Pahang for another six months till June 30 next year, which was supposed to expire on December 31.
{alcircleadd}Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said in a statement that the cabinet has decided to extend the ban on bauxite mining after the announcement by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) that it would withdraw its seizure order on 10 million tonnes of bauxite stockpile in Pahang.
The ministry said, “On Dec 21, the MACC announced that it would withdraw its seizure order on the estimated 10 million tonnes of bauxite, after the ministry and the Minerals and Geoscience Department as well as the state government agreed to introduce new rules to crack down on illegal mining of bauxite.”
The government first banned the bauxite mining on January 15, 2016 after the residents protested over contamination of water due to unregulated bauxite mining.
