World primary aluminium production in Aug’22 shows restrained M-o-M but grows 3.5% Y-o-Y to total 5.888 Mt

According to the data released by the International Aluminium Institute, world primary aluminium production stood muted at 5.888 million tonnes in August 2022 compared to 5.878 million tonnes a month ago. But the output in July reflected a hike of 3.78 per cent month-on-month from 5.664 million tonnes.

On a year-on-year calculation, world primary aluminium output in August marked a rise of 3.53 per cent from 5.687 million tonnes.

In the first eight months of 2022, world primary aluminium production totalled 45.448 million tonnes, up by 0.72 per cent from 45.125 million tonnes.

Among the major primary aluminium producing countries, China churned out 3.5 million tonnes of the metal in August 2022, in contrast to 3.497 million tonnes in July. That reflected a month-on-month restraint, but on a year-on-year basis, the output grew by 6.42 per cent from 3.289 million tonnes. From January to August of 2022, China produced 26.692 million tonnes, up by 1.81 per cent from 26.218 million tonnes during the same period last year.

In the Gulf countries, aluminium production in August stood at 514,000 tonnes, down by 2,000 tonnes from 516,000 tonnes in the previous month but up by 13,000 tonnes from 501,000 tonnes a year ago. In the first eight months of the year, the Gulf countries produced 4.039 million tonnes combined, recording an increase of 4.02 per cent from 3.883 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Aluminium output in Asia (ex-China) amounted to 387,000 tonnes during August’22, seeing a monthly rise of 5,000 tonnes or 1.31 per cent from 382,000 tonnes. On a year-on-year basis, the output grew by 2,000 tonnes from 385,000 tonnes. From January-August 2022, Asia’s aluminium output totalled 3.042 million tonnes versus 2.977 million tonnes a year earlier.
