World primary aluminium production in February’22 registers a 9% fall to 5.114 MT, but daily average output sees a rise

According to the latest data shown by the International Aluminium Institute, world primary aluminium production in February 2022 recorded a downfall of 9.34 per cent month-on-month to stand at 5.114 million tonnes.  In January, the output scored at 5.641 million tonnes, up by 1.95 per cent sequentially from 5.533 million tonnes.

Also, on a year-on-year calculation, world primary aluminium production in February’22 stood lower by 2.33 per cent than 5.236 million tonnes.

In two-month time of this year, production totalled 10.755 million tonnes, reflecting a fall of 2.28 per cent from 11.006 million tonnes during the same period last year.

Daily average production of primary aluminium across the world came in at 182,600 tonnes in February 2022 as compared to 182,000 tonnes in January 2022 and 187,000 tonnes in February 2021.

China, the world’s leading producer of the metal, churned out 2.946 million tonnes (approx.) of primary aluminium in February 2022, down by 8.74 per cent from 3.228 million tonnes a month ago and 3.35 per cent less than 3.048 million tonnes a year earlier. During Jan-Feb 2022, China’s aluminium production was recorded at 6.174 million tonnes, seeing a decrease of 3.70 per cent from 6.411 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

In the Gulf region, primary aluminium production in February 2022 stood at 462,000 tonnes, 10.64 per cent less than 517,000 tonnes in January 2022. But on a year-on-year basis, the output stood 1.99 per cent higher than 453,000 tonnes. In the first two months of the year, primary aluminium production in the Gulf region was at 979,000 tonnes, up by 3.60 per cent Y-o-Y from 945,000 tonnes.

In the Oceania, primary aluminium production in February 2022 was at 145,000 tonnes, 14,000 tonnes or 8.81 per cent less than 159,000 tonnes in January 2022 and mostly unchanged from the previous year as against 146,000 tonnes. During Jan-Feb, total production stood at 304,000 tonnes, 3,000 tonnes lower than 307,000 tonnes during the same period last year.
