The largest fully integrated aluminium manufacturer in Sri Lanka and a member of the Hayleys Group, Alumex, recently launched a pilot project in the nation to collect used aluminium beverage cans (UBCs) as part of its initiative to care for the environment. Alumex is reaffirming its commitment to sustainability by ensuring the circularity of aluminium sourcing.
{alcircleadd}Recycling aluminium can be called the need of the hour. With the world already dealing with issues like rising carbon emissions, growing global population, and increasing energy costs, recycling aluminium is proving to be a need than a cause of concern.
The manufacturer established sizable bins at strategic points in densely populated areas and laid out plans to implement the project throughout the island. The effort promotes the proper disposal of aluminium waste in a way that helps the environment and preserves it, opening the door for cleaner land and water bodies.
“Alumex is built on key values that drive the organisation, one of which is ‘Good Citizenship. In line with the Hayleys Lifecode, we strive not only to build a sustainable business that contributes to national GDP but also to actively contribute to the betterment of our environment and surrounding. Circularity in sourcing raw materials is a subject that industries across the globe have begun to address. With our expertise, we can re-use empty aluminium beverage cans in our manufacturing process while ensuring that global alloy standards are adhered to and provide a low-carbon product to the global market,” said Pramuk Dediwela, Managing Director at Alumex.
Alumex is the first producer in Sri Lanka to agree to the standards and is the newest member of the Manufacturing and Transformation Division of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. It will collaborate with other members to promote ethical production, sourcing, and stewardship.
At the Asia Integrated Reporting Awards, Alumex recognised its steadfast dedication to openness and governance. The firm was recognised with a Bronze award in the Integrated Report (SME) category for clearly explaining how it creates value for stakeholders.
