In October 2020, alumina production in South America stood at 926,000 tonnes, registering an increase of 24.63 per cent month-on-month following a slight dip in the previous month, showed the International Aluminium Institute (IAI). In September 2020, alumina production in South America came in at 743,000 tonnes, down by 3,000 tonnes from 746,000 in August. South America’s alumina output in August 2020 also recorded a decrease of 22.45 per cent month-on-month from 962,000 tonnes in July.
So, the total alumina production during July-October 2020 amounted to 3.577 million tonnes, down by 9.44 per cent from 3.950 million tonnes during the same period last year.
In the first ten months of the year (January-October), alumina production in South America totalled 9.664 million tonnes, growing by 10.62 per cent year-on-year from 8.736 million tonnes.
In North America, alumina production in October stood at 228,000 tonnes, up by 29,000 tonnes or 14.57 per cent from 199,000 tonnes in September. In August 2020, North America produced 238,000 tonnes of alumina, meaning the production in September declined by 16.39 per cent month-on-month.
On a year-on-year basis, North America’s alumina production in October 2020 decreased by 5 per cent from 240,000 tonnes.

In the entire first ten months of 2020, North America churned 2.215 million tonnes, down by 8.70 per cent from 2.426 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.
