Aluminium Stewardship Initiative announced on Tuesday, November 22, that it successfully certified Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad, against the Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification. Through the certification, ASI has acknowledged the company's aluminium smelting, re-melting/refining, casting, and aluminium dross internal recovery activities at the Sarawak facility in Malaysia.
{alcircleadd}The facility has an annual production capacity of 960,000 tonnes of aluminium in the form of ingots, billets, primary foundry alloys, and wire rods. It is the first smelting operation in Southeast Asia to achieve AI Certification.
Earlier, in September 2022, Press Metal International Ltd in Foshan, China, another subsidiary of Press Metal, received ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status for extrusion activities.
Mr Choa Wei Keong, Group General Manager (Smelting Division), said: “We are delighted that Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd has achieved the Performance Standard Certification, meeting ASI’s world-class environmental, social and governance standards. This marks an important milestone in our efforts and unceasing commitment towards shaping sustainable operations. The production of low-carbon aluminium is our core business strategy in creating a greener world. By aligning with ASI standards, we are assured that our sustainability management will be further strengthened, reinforcing our stature as a responsible Aluminium producer.”

The carbon footprint of the facility’s production process draws benefit from local renewable energy via hydropower. The ASI Performance Standard’s criteria go further to address a full spectrum of environmental, social and governance issues, and the company’s ASI Certification demonstrates its broad commitment to responsible business practices.”
The independent, third-party audit of the Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd operation was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
