Capral Aluminium has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In order to make this happen, Capral will have to achieve net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2, with the support of new and breakthrough technological alternatives. The scientific community has said unequivocally that net-zero global CO2 emissions must be achieved by mid-century to keep global warming to 1.5°C and prevent the harmful effects of climate change on human civilization and ecosystems.
{alcircleadd}Carpal's net-zero promise, according to Michael O’Keefe, will first target Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Michael O’Keefe is the General Manager of the Marketing and Technology department at Capral Aluminium. Direct emissions from company-owned and controlled resources are included in Scope 1. In other words, emissions discharged into the atmosphere as a direct result of a set of operational activities. Indirect emissions from the generation of bought energy from a utility provider are included in Scope 2. In other words, all GHG emissions emitted into the environment as a result of the usage of bought energy and gas.
“We have an absolute commitment to our staff, customers, stakeholders and the communities within which our facilities operate to ensure we are eliminating sources of emissions within the value chain of our business. Organisations around the world are recognising that this is a decision that cannot wait any longer and Capral is no different, we are proud to make this commitment and confident in our ability to achieve it,” said Michael O’Keefe, General Manager of Capral, Marketing & Technology who oversees Capral’s National Sustainability Committee and roadmap.
Capral Aluminium recognizes that in the world we live in, it must behave sensibly to safeguard the environment and society as a whole while also working in the interests of stakeholders and consumers. Capral's procurement methods and business actions as a major aluminium supplier will highlight Capral's commitment to the United Nations SDGs and its objective of working towards sustainability best practices.
“Our focus is very much on eliminating the source of emissions, we intend to do this by improving our plant and equipment, implementing new technologies and embracing more sustainable practices across our organsiation. Working with our upstream supply partners we will continue to look for options to incorporate more low carbon aluminium in our value chain and where feasible embrace circularity principles,” added Michael.
To achieve net-zero emissions, Capral will need to offset its remaining GHG emissions with an equal quantity of carbon removals. Capral understands that a successful neutralisation plan entails collecting carbon from the atmosphere and storing it for a long enough time to entirely negate the influence of any GHGs that are still being produced. Capral also recognises the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a common roadmap for peace and prosperity for people and the earth as an overarching safeguard.
“In recognising the UN SDGs, we implement environmental and social safeguards in our operations and decision making process to ensure we continue to develop our position as a socially and environmentally aware organisation,” added Michael.
Finally, Capral recognises that the net-zero 2050 promise requires resiliency and openness and will continue to report publicly on its environmental impact and progress toward its Net Zero goal as part of their annual and midyear reporting cycles.
