Penrhos Spirits, a Herefordshire-based liquor company, has bagged the Gin Guide's coveted Product of the Year award. The limited edition Wonky Raspberry from Penrhos Spirits was introduced in 100 per cent recycled aluminium bottles to mark the transfer using additional, wobbly raspberries from the farm during the summer of 2022.
{alcircleadd}The award is generally given to the gin with the highest total score from the blind tasting of the judges and the design and branding area. As part of its continuous commitment to the environment, the company will move all of its spirits into aluminium bottles in the future.
"We were so delighted to find out that we'd won the Gin Guide's Product of the Year. 2023 has been a real step change for all of us at Penrhos, as we made the move to launch our gins into 100 per cent recycled aluminium bottles moving forward, and it's really fantastic to see the industry responding so well to this," said Harriet Williams, spokesperson at Penrhos Spirits.
The introduction of aluminium bottles comes after the release of 2.5-litre refillable pouches for trade earlier in 2022. These pouches are recyclable for on-trade customers and use less energy to create and transport than glass bottles. The Penrhos range of spirits will be marketed only in aluminium bottles until 2023.
"We're also especially proud that our Wonky Raspberry represents a real effort to cut down on food waste at the farm, as we created this limited edition flavour by distilling surplus raspberries from last summer, with every bottle containing 100g of wonky raspberries. Working with wibbly wobbly fruit has always been at the centre of our spirits-making ethos since we started making gin back in 2018," added Harriet Williams.
Launched in 2014, Gin Guide is a global, independent resource for trade and consumers and a membership organisation for gin producers. The Gin Guide aims to help consumers discover new gins, distilleries, and ways to enjoy gin while giving gin producers a platform to engage new audiences, share their stories, sell more bottles, and generate more tour reservations.
