At FACHPACK 2024, Constantia Flexibles will showcase its innovative print service for aluminium and PET die-cut dairy lids, marking a first in the industry. Additionally, they will present various sustainable packaging solutions, including a paper twist-wrap and a compostable coffee capsule lid.
{alcircleadd}Constantia Flexibles asserts it is the only flexible packaging company capable of digitally printing full-surface, water-based designs on aluminium without affecting its sealing properties. While the current technology supports printing on aluminium and PE, plans are underway to expand this capability to all substrates in the future.
The company claims that over 90 per cent of its portfolio offers recyclable alternatives and will present its '360-degree materials approach' at the trade fair, featuring aluminium, film, and paper solutions. This includes the Ecolutions packaging range, which caters to various food and beverage applications.
About EcoPeelCover
EcoPeelCover is a streamlined lidding solution designed for polypropylene and polyethylene cups. In 2024, it was honoured with a German Packaging Award in the Sustainability – Material Reduction category, recognising its ability to reduce aluminium thickness by 25% and the coating layer by 50 per cent.
The product reportedly offers high-barrier properties to extend the shelf life of dairy products, along with an easy-peel coating for smooth and consistent opening. It also provides reliable sealing and high corrosion resistance and can operate at temperatures ranging from 180°C to 230°C.
According to Constantia, EcoPeelCover features solvent-free UV-Flexo printing. Its reduced material usage and lighter transport weight are expected to decrease its carbon footprint. Additionally, customers can request the solution in low carbon aluminium (Lowcarbalu) with ASI-certified quality.
Low Carbon Aluminium (Lowcarbalu) with ASI-certified quality
Aligned with global sustainability goals, Lowercarbalu is designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional aluminium solutions without sacrificing performance or durability. This material is suitable for a wide range of packaging lines.
Another solution being showcased is PPCover, a mono-polypropylene die-cut lid. Since it contains no metal, it can be properly sorted during the metal detection stage at the end of its lifecycle. Constantia emphasises the lid's excellent opacity and resistance to punctures and tearing. It also offers heat resistance and can be sealed using standard flat sealing tools.
PPCover is designed for use with polypropylene cups and is ideal for applications such as non-retort-ready meals, non-carbonated beverages, and dairy products like yoghurts.
EcoAluTainer for preserved food packaging
Constantia will introduce its lightweight, recyclable aluminium packaging, EcoAluTainer, for preserved food packaging. Designed for both human and pet food, these stackable containers are reportedly free from harmful substances like epoxy resins containing BPA.
Being retortable, EcoAluTainer offers a safe and environmentally friendly packaging solution while meeting high performance and quality standards. Its potential applications include sausage packaging, dry pet food, and drink pouches. Similar to EcoPeelCover, EcoAluTainer is available in Lowcarbalu and features ASI-certified aluminium.
Constantia Flexibles at FACHPACK
Constantia Flexibles is set to showcase its digital print service at FACHPACK, highlighting its competitive speed that accelerates product development, approval, and shipping times. Unlike traditional printing methods, this service eliminates the need for clichés, plates, or cylinders, aiming to cut costs by minimising artwork preparation at repro houses.
The service ensures consistent print quality by covering 93 per cent of Pantone colours. It supports short runs, reduces working capital, and allows for multiple customisations within a batch while minimising material waste. Constantia emphasises the use of water-based inks that comply with food safety and sustainability standards.
