Merlo Coffee provided an update this week on the roastery’s sustainability initiatives and discussed their goals of reducing carbon emissions. In December 2022, the company introduced aluminium coffee pods along its retail line to substantially curtail carbon emissions. From June 2021 to July 2022, the company offset over 1.2 million kilograms of carbon, the equivalent of driving over 4.5 million kilometres in a modern car.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative recognised Crown Holdings, Inc.’s two beverage cans manufacturing facilities in Nong Khae District, Thailand, with Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certifications. Crown Bevcan and Closures (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Crown TCP Beverage Cans Company Limited received certifications for manufacturing aluminium cans for the food and beverage packaging industry. Crown’s operations in Brazil and Mexico also achieved Performance Standard Certifications earlier.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certified SuperAlloy Industrial Co., Ltd. (SAI) with Performance Standard V3 (2022) Certification for manufacturing lightweight metal products for the automotive industry. The certification was given for producing high-end forged aluminium wheels and suspension parts for luxury and sports cars at Yunlin Plant I in Taiwan. SAI has an annual production capacity of 900,000 pieces.

The Plansee Group, based in Reutte, Austria, initiated an ambitious project beginning in the spring of 2022. The project involves collaboration with Trimet, an aluminium manufacturer headquartered in Essen, Germany, as well as Arctus, a technology enterprise from Iceland, and Saarland University. The primary objective of this joint effort is to scale up a novel production method that eradicates the necessity of carbon in the aluminium manufacturing process. By replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen as a byproduct, this innovative approach significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with aluminium production.

Aluminium Dunkerque in North France announced its significant strides towards decarbonisation.
